Greens News 8.5.08
The next visit of the Course Consultant takes place on Monday 12th May where the focus will be on the greens. Questions to be discussed include how do Copt Heath get their greens ready so much earlier in the year & what implications does it have on their greens throughout the playing season. On the same day, a demonstration of a Graydon greens scarifier will take place on that part of the putting green used for chipping. The machine is to be reviewed for end of season work on the greens. This will produce some disruption to the playing surface & this will be assessed after the demonstration. With the warmer weather comes lots of growth but unfortunately last year’s fusarium scars are only slowly healing despite significant effort – scarifying, overseeding & individual treatment of the worst affected areas. Over the next ten days it is planned to apply three light top dressings to address the uneven surface & increase the pace of the greens.I have received a suggestion that the stream should no longer be declared a water hazard hence would not require to be defined by yellow lines. Whichever way we go, there are a number of implications. The Hon. Match Secretary & I are discussing this but if anyone has any views please let one of us know.Just a reminder that all areas of GUR will be defined by white lines & appropriate signage. No sign – no GUR.Please play from only the markers of the day at all tees. Please note that use of the white tees in non-competition play is only for Club male members. Guests of members, visitors (unless playing in a recognised Club match) and society players are not allowed to use the white tees unless authorised by the Club. Please repair pitch marks, replace divots, rake bunkers (pushing sand back towards the front faces), leave rakes inside bunkers and follow signs. Also keep trolleys off the tees, greens and surrounds (by taking them outside greenside bunkers). This all helps to keep the course in good condition. If you have any comments or suggestions about the course please leave me a message in the Secretary’s OfficeIan Phipps, Chairman of Greens.
